What Questions Should You Ask Before Choosing a Dental Clinic?

What Questions Should You Ask Before Choosing a Dental Clinic?

Most people begin their search for a dental clinic abroad by comparing prices. That makes sense — cost savings are one of the main reasons patients consider dental tourism in the first place. But price alone tells you very little about the quality of care you will receive. The questions you ask before booking reveal far more than any price list ever could. They show you how a clinic communicates, how transparent they are, and whether they are set up to handle international patients with the attention and structure that cross-border treatment demands.

1. Who will actually perform my treatment?

This is the single most important question, and it is surprising how rarely patients ask it. You want a specific name, not just a clinic brand. Ask for the treating dentist's specialisation, years of experience, and credentials. If you are getting implants, the surgeon should be a specialist in implantology or oral surgery — not a general dentist who occasionally places implants. A reputable clinic will be proud to share this information and may even arrange a video call with your doctor before you travel.

2. What materials do you use, and why?

Materials matter enormously in dentistry. There is a significant difference between a premium implant system like Neodent Straumann or Nobel Biocare and an unbranded alternative. The same applies to porcelain work — brands like Ivoclar IPS e.max or Vita offer predictable aesthetics and longevity that cheaper ceramics simply cannot match. Ask the clinic which brands they use, why they chose them, and whether you will receive documentation or a material passport for your records. If a clinic is vague about materials, that is a warning sign.

3. Is the lab in-house or outsourced?

The dental laboratory is where your crowns, veneers, or prosthetics are physically crafted. An in-house lab means faster turnaround, tighter quality control, and the ability to make adjustments on the same day if something does not fit perfectly. Outsourced labs are not necessarily bad, but they add time, reduce flexibility, and make it harder for the dentist to communicate precise shade and shape preferences. For smile makeovers and full-mouth restorations, an in-house lab is a significant advantage.

4. What happens if I need a check-up after I return home?

Aftercare is where many dental tourism experiences fall apart. A good clinic will have a clear protocol for follow-up: scheduled video consultations, a dedicated patient coordinator you can reach by WhatsApp or email, and partnerships with dentists in your home country if in-person review is needed. Ask specifically what happens at two weeks, three months, and one year after treatment. If the clinic has no structured aftercare plan, you are essentially on your own once you board your flight home.

5. Can I see a treatment plan before I travel?

A professional clinic should be able to provide a preliminary treatment plan based on your panoramic X-ray or CT scan before you book any flights. This plan should outline the proposed procedures, the number of appointments required, the estimated timeline, and a detailed cost breakdown. If a clinic insists you must arrive before they can tell you anything, that is not how modern dentistry works. Remote consultations and digital planning tools make pre-travel assessments entirely possible and expected.

6. What's not included in the price?

The advertised price is often not the final price. Ask explicitly whether the quote includes diagnostic imaging (panoramic X-ray, CT scan), temporary restorations, medications, follow-up appointments, hotel transfers, and any lab fees. Some clinics quote only the clinical procedure and add everything else as extras once you arrive. A transparent clinic will give you an all-inclusive figure or clearly itemise what is and is not covered so there are no surprises on the day.

7. How are complications handled?

Complications are rare with experienced practitioners, but they can happen in any medical procedure. Ask the clinic what their policy is if an implant fails within the first year, if a crown fractures, or if you experience unexpected pain after returning home. Do they cover the cost of retreatment? Will they fly you back or reimburse local treatment? A clinic that has thought through these scenarios and has written guarantees is one that stands behind its work. Vague reassurances like "don't worry, it won't happen" are not acceptable answers.

A simple test

If a clinic answers all seven of these questions clearly, promptly, and without defensiveness, you are probably in good hands. If they dodge, delay, or become irritated by your questions, that tells you something important about how they will treat you as a patient. At Safari Health Journey, we encourage every prospective patient to ask these questions — to us and to any other clinic they are considering. Transparency is not a marketing strategy; it is the foundation of trust between a patient and their care team.
